HYBE Intern, Production Team, and Intern Leo Apologize For Offensive Words

HYBE’s Intern A production team and intern Leo have both officially apologized for the recent controversy over his rap lyrics.

Leo, who is best known for his brief appearance in BTSThe music video for “Permission to Dance” is one of the interns on HYBE’s group Trainee A, a six-member team that many say are the new boy group Big Hit Music plans to debut in 2022.

Leo was recently criticized for a video posted to Intern A’s official YouTube account titled “Showdown” in which he took part in a rap battle.

The 19-year-old intern, from Australia, personally wrote his own English lyrics for the battle – and many were alarmed by some of the lines in his rap, which have been criticized for being misogynist and offensive to women, such that “Nobody’s gonna tell me why that bitch stopped breathing / fuck that bitch in my bank / yeah that shit stopped breathing / tell that bitch / bring that bitch to the store / nobody’s gonna tell me why that bitch has stopped breathing. “

On December 29, after deleting the video in question, Intern A’s production team posted the following apologies on their official English YouTube account:

We would like to extend our sincere apologies for the inappropriate lyrics in the video “Leo’s SHOWDOWN” uploaded to Trainee A’s YouTube channel in October.

We would also like to apologize to all those to whom we have caused pain and distress because of the words in question. We will use extra caution in creating content.

We will be vigilant to ensure that each intern, including Leo, fully understands the issues of diversity and respect so that they can be more attentive to their actions and words.

We’ll also be sure to pay more attention to your advice, and we’ll continue to strive to create better content.

We would like to apologize once again to anyone who may have felt pain and distress due to the Trainee A video.

The team also released the following apology in English from Leo:

Hello. It’s Leo.

I would like to sincerely apologize to all those who were offended by the lyrics published in the first episode of SHOWDOWN.

Since it was a competition, I felt like I needed to use more provocative words and phrases to make an impact. It ultimately led me to make an extremely bad decision that I feel very embarrassed about. I had absolutely no intention of offending or degrading anyone, but my words and thoughts were very immature and I deeply apologize.

I have been thinking over and over again about my mistakes, and after reviewing the video, I feel extremely embarrassed and ashamed of my performance. While I cannot go back, I am aware that it was all my fault and will do whatever it takes to reflect and learn from my mistakes.

Once again, to anyone who may have been offended by my inappropriate actions and words, I sincerely apologize. I will take this opportunity to reflect and think of more positive and mature ways to express myself through my music.
