Sony Pictures Post-Production Services upgrades two mixing stages


Two key post-production stages of Sony Pictures Post-Production Services received comprehensive mixing upgrades.

The renovation of the 229-seat Kim Novak Theater has just been completed. The theater is now equipped with a new loudspeaker array and a cinema screen. As part of the renovation, its electrical infrastructure and interior were also upgraded.

The studio’s William Holden Theater will get a facelift later this year. An Anthony Quinn Theater upgrade is also planned. It will include the addition of Dolby Atmos capability.

Sony Pictures has also upgraded its Dub Stage 12, adding Atmos features, as it continues a multi-year effort to expand and update its sound facilities. “It is our responsibility to ensure our clients and talent have access to state-of-the-art sound facilities,” said Tom McCarthy, Executive Vice President, Post-Production Facilities. “We are committed to providing a creative campus and culture that helps filmmakers bring their stories to the screen the way they envision.”

The renovations were carried out under the direction of Kimberly Jimenez, Vice President, Post-Production Services, and Lane Burch, Executive Director, Post-Production Sound Engineering. The Novak theater now includes a JBL 5742 4-way screen speaker system and a Stewart cinema screen.

The stage was completely rewired and its technical rooms grouped together in a single space. The interior has been refreshed with new customer workstations, furniture, lighting and flooring. The stage supports mixing in Dolby Atmos, 5.1, 7.1, Auromax, DTS-X and IMAX formats.

The facelifted Dub Stage 12 features a 48-fader Avid S6 dual console, a JBL three-way screen speaker array, a JBL cinema subwoofer, a JBL speaker system with two-way and a JBL large format cinema surround. Twelve of the 14 mixing stages in the Sony Pictures bundle now support Atmos.

Re-recording mixers Vicki Lemar and Kenneth Kobett have been recruited to work at Sony Pictures Post Production Services. The two will be based in Dub Stage 12. Lemar and Kobett have been a team for four years with credits including the TV series “Riverdale”, “Yellowjackets”, “Roar” and “American Horror Story”.

Lemar spent his entire 16-year sound career at Technicolor (now Formosa Group). Her notable credits include “Grace and Frankie”, “GLOW” and “Veronica Mars”.

Kobett has over 150 credits as a re-recording mixer and sound editor and is a three-time Emmy Award winner.

Lemar says she and Kobett were drawn to Sony Pictures by the breadth of its technical resources and the creative atmosphere on the ground. “It’s a beautiful environment and it gives the impression of being on a university campus,” she observes. “I love going for walks and meeting other artists. The energy is palpable. »

One of the studio’s goals in expanding sonic resources is to ensure that its mixing stages are sonically and technically compatible to provide mixers with cohesive working environments and planning flexibility. As Burch explains, “If a project is interrupted and the sound team is unable to access their original stage when they return, they can switch spaces and pick up where they left off. was arrested.”

Sony Pictures Post Production Services has also expanded its customer services. “We’ve expanded our customer lounge,” says Jimenez. “It’s a comfortable and inviting space with natural light and plenty of amenities.
