UK production company deploys LiveU for dynamic 5G remote production of Vitality London 10K Run

Long-time LiveU user and UK-based production company, Over Exposed, has once again turned to LiveU to create dynamic, viewer-engaging and highly profitable 5G remote production coverage of the recent and iconic Vitality London 10K race. The race has also entered the British 10k Championships.

Over Exposed started using LiveU eight years ago and has continued to expand its use of the technology, expanding from small streaming projects to large-scale streaming events to broadcast. The production company is known for its remote productions and overall outside broadcast work.

She owns four units and expanded it to six in order to create the dynamic and mobile coverage of this event. Over Exposed deployed a mix of multi-camera LU300 and LU800 units. It provided the technical installations on site, the acquisition of the streams via LiveU, then the management of these streams towards Gravity Media. Gravity Media’s Remote Production Gallery received the feeds and handled the production (commentary, graphics and all that was necessary) before distributing them to the London Marathon YouTube channel and the BBC Red Button service.

Russell Martin, co-owner of Over Exposed, said: “It is a very well established event and we have a strong relationship with the London Marathon. They posed the question of how we could make the coverage as engaging and energetic as possible, and as profitable. So we did just that with LiveU. Due to the scale, having a partner of Gravity Media’s expertise was invaluable.

Over Exposed used roving cameras and LiveU units to allow presenters to move freely because, as Martin said, the inherent mobility of technology encourages it. “It gave us access that with a traditional OB truck would have been either impossible or prohibitively expensive,” he added. The company also used three motorcycles with LiveU units to track the riders.

He said: “Again, this gave us unparalleled flexibility and cost savings, otherwise we would have had to use a helicopter. You don’t need to spend big bucks rigging gear around London, which is, of course, also a logistical nightmare. You don’t need permissions for cranes or planes etc. It’s a much more cost-effective, efficient and flexible way of working: it allowed us to gather quality content where we wanted it. Combined with the resource savings of remote production, as well as 5G, which is definitely an advantage, although LiveU also works wonderfully with 4G, it was a very successful project.

Ryan Goad, Communications Manager at London Marathon Events, said: “The coverage achieved at the Vitality London 10,000 was excellent. The on-bike footage was crystal clear and helped bring a fantastic collection of elite racing to life, as well as providing a real sense of the varied emotions of the thousands of mass riders who took part in the event. The cost savings of using this technology also cannot be ignored given its importance. »

Malcolm Harland, Country Director of LiveU UK, said: “The way Over Exposed used our technology for this event is true vindication of all the work LiveU has done in the sports market and beyond. Remote production, 5G – 4G too – and LiveU is a great combination of technologies and workflows that ultimately benefits the viewer.
